Michael Kearns will present Maureen Cotter in OMG I’m Turning 70

KEARNS’ PRODUCES
70-YEAR OLD “NEWCOMER”

Veteran theater artist Michael Kearns will present Maureen Cotter in OMG I’m Turning 70 at the Spirit Studio in Silver Lake.

In her Silver Lake debut, the standup storyteller defies age, gravity, and sexual deviance. Maureen Cotter has been performing yearly one-nighters for a hundred or so of her friends at Beyond Baroque in Venice for the past eight years.

Kearns “discovered” her and insisted that she get more exposure. “As an aging member of our community, it has become shockingly clear that we are the invisible ones. At nearly seventy years old, Maureen is a naughty, timely, and charismatic entertainer. She deserves to be seen.”

And she will be: for three Saturday nights—January 12, 19, and 26, 8:00 PM—at the Spirit Studio, 2601 Hyperion in Silver Lake (@ Evans, above Barbarella’s, 90027). Admission is $12 at the door. There is an open bar. Reservations are not required.

Cotter has experienced a storied life: After graduating from high school in New England,
she bought a 1939 Chevy at a junkyard and headed west to the Pasadena Playhouse where she received a B.A in Theater Arts. After her acting career, she entered Cal State L.A.’s graduate program to study psychology and wound up as the Chaplain’s Assistant at the Pacific State Mental Hospital.

“Tired of having feces thrown at me,” the lesbian comic says, she got a job at the California State Penitentiary for Women. Her experiences “in prison” comprise My Guarded Secrets, a book that will likely be published in 2013.

After her jail time, Cotter became a highly successful head hunter for the next thirty-five years. It wasn’t until she turned sixty that she pursued her creative side. She has since written eight solo shows, numerous magazine articles and achieved civic and artistic accolades.

OMG I’m Turning 70 is a candid and hilarious look at aging as an out lesbian with no axes to grind. Cotter is a cross between Phyllis Diller and Erma Bombeck with a tad of Red Skelton thrown in the mix.

  1. I had the pleasure of going to school with Maureen at the Pasadena Playhouse then we knew her as Boston due to the accent and her home. She is a very personable, gifted individual and what you see is what you get type of individual. One of the greatest blessing of my life was meeting Boston and am so glad we have one more time caught up with each other.

She is a very unique individual and very real. She is doing what she was born to do and all I can say is “you go girl”

If at all possible I strongly suggest getting to know her and be ready for the ride of your life. God Bless you Boston!!
