Another Saturday Saying

“Last night I was in my dressing room at the Taper when I got the feeling something wasn’t quite right. Turned my attention to the monitor and realized that Bob Foxworth had taken the stage as soon as the house lights came up at intermission to lambaste (and I mean, EXCORIATE) the audience member whose cell phone rang (and rang and rang) throughout a particularly quiet, sensitive moment in Act I. It was a full-blown diatribe followed by thunderous applause from the house. Stunning, thrilling and extremely, extremely satisfying to experience this thing I’ve fantasized about doing so many times. This is a story my grandchildren will definitely get sick of hearing…”

When I do this nobody applauds; they just look at me as if I’ve really overstepped the boundaries of comportment. And then when I’m punching them repeatedly in the face they call the police. I do not understand people.

The key is to do it while standing on a stage. It’s amazing what you can get away with while standing on a stage. The laws of physics and proportion seem to have no bearing when one is standing on a stage.

One of my favorite compliments from a friend who saw me act in a show exemplifies this; I met him at the stage door afterwards and I asked him, kind of jokingly, “How’d I look?” He took a moment and then responded, “Bigger.”

    Boom.

I had that experience once when I walked out naked from behind the fish tank.
