West Coast Premiere of Abuelita’s Christmas Carol

She’s no Scrooge or George Bailey. She’s a lot more spicy!

Charles Dickens is taking over local Los Angeles stages this season. Look and you can find old-fashioned, modern dress, locally-based, musical, and “A Christmas Carol” with a twist. Santa Monica Playhouse presents its own version with the West Coast premiere of Texan Alex Garza’s comic and sentimental tribute to his grandmother: ABUELITA’S CHRISTMAS CAROL for four matinee performances only  (in English)Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 pm & 4:00 pm and Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 pm; and  (in Spanish)Sunday, December 16, 2012. at 4:00 pm.

Playwright Alex Garza portrays his beloved grandmother Rosita and nine other characters, including the ghost of his little pig in this hilarious and heart-warming holiday offering.

Rosa, the 70 year old abuelita (grandmother) of the title has her own cooking show but as the holidays approach she begins to question her life and its meaning. Rosa journeys through memories both happy and sad, navigated by the people of her past and the ghosts of  loved ones bringing her to the enlightenment she needs to realize how much she has truly made a difference.

Alex Garza has been writing and performing most of his life. He visits Los Angeles from the hill country of Texas, the state where he was born and raised. In his theatrical career, he has played various roles on the stage, as well as written several plays. He performed his first solo show, entitled Pulse, at the Blue Theatre in Austin. Since then, he has created many one-man plays, including I’m Not Gandhi, The Baby Harp Seal Diaries, Coconut, and Misfit. His shows have been seen throughout South and Central Texas, ranging fromHouston to Del Rio. In addition to his solo career, he has worked with many professional theatre companies in theAustin area. Having earned his Master’s Degree in Theatre from Eastern Michigan University, he has also taught students of all ages for many years.
