Mr. Satan Goes to Wall Street
THE BLURB
NEW YORK – MR. SATAN GOES TO WALL STREET is a new street-theater musical comedy by the award-winning guerrilla-theater company the Imagination Liberation Front. Mr. Satan will perform this summer, outdoors in the parks of New York City – including for the Occupy Wall Street troops in Zuccotti Park – and in the streets outside of the Republican and Democratic national conventions.
IN MR. SATAN, Satan is laid off from Hell because humanity has become too adept at doing evil. To get his job back, Satan makes a deal with neoliberal economist Larry Summers to break up Occupy Wall Street. But the love between two young OWS activists might shake the Devil’s allegiance. What would Satan do? Our answer: He’d sing!
WE ARE Hieronymous BANG and Sam Precario, members of the Imagination Liberation Front, a theater company dedicated to the liberation of the imagination through the mobilization of the population. BANG wrote and directed the guerrilla comedy smash “I’m Gonna Kill the President!” A Federal Offense, which played at theaters, parks, parking lots, basements, and alleys around the country for five years during Bush II. We are a guerrilla theater company in the public service. We oppose violence and boredom. We conduct guerrilla theater workshops for disadvantaged youth and other interested parties wherever we go. We wield theater as a powerful tool for social change. We mass-produce that tool through cathartic indoctrination.
We created this piece to raise consciousness, challenge OWS to specify its vision, and turn re-occupation of Zuccotti Park into five-star theater. We model change that is creative and fun, and there’s nothing more fun than laughing, crying, singing and dancing—while occupying public space. Although this play will be performed outdoors, during demonstrations and other events, it will be executed with artistic precision and panache. A well-crafted, quality work of theater sends the message that our movement is not one of slovenly slackers but of focused, committed visionaries.
We are taking the power of creativity to the front lines of the economic justice movement. We aim to seize this historical moment, to use theater to tell the truth, and to demonstrate the power of imagination to solve real-world problems.
THIS IS A CRUCIAL TIME to act against corporate rule. Greedmongers call the shots. Our leaders are compromised or downright bad. Many of us are struggling. Our voices are squeezed out of mainstream media. The good news is, upon quick review of human history, profound social change always starts from the grassroots level—possibly from the same parks and streets where Mr. Satan will perform.
