The Improv Space is proud to present Den of Thieves, a play by Stephen Adly Guirgis, which premiered in New York City in a production by Philip Seymour Hoffman’s LAByrinth Theater with Sam Rockwell as Flaco. Guirgis most recently wrote The Motherf**ker With the Hat which debuted on Broadway featuring Chris Rock.
Den of Thieves is directed by Adam Macy (The Board), the managing director of The Improv Space, and features a cast of players who perform every week at The Improv Space. Nicole Day (Gentlemanly) is Maggie, John Davies (The Wait List) is Paul, Samir Forghani (Distant Relatives) is Flaco, Jessica Rose-Felix (Distant Relatives) is Boochie, Ben Goldsmith (The Board) is Little Tuna, Andrew Cottrell (Distant Relatives) is Sal, and Michael Gantz (The Board) is Big Tuna.
Maggie is a newly single, junk-food-binging shoplifter looking to change her life and her self-hating ways. Paul is her sponsor in a twelve-step program for recovering thieves. Maggie’s jealous ex-boyfriend is a small-time thief of uncertain ancestry named Flaco who spins a persuasive yarn about seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars in unprotected drug money sitting in a safe in a Tribeca disco. The crew is rounded out by Flaco’s new girlfriend, Boochie, a topless dancer who refuses to let her troubled childhood or her third-grade reading level stand in the way of her inevitable path to fame, fortune and fur. When things don’t quite go according to plan, the hapless thieves finds themselves at the mercy of Louie “The Little Tuna” Pescatore, a reluctant heir to the criminal empire run by his father—”The Big Tuna”—who has left him in charge for the weekend and Sal, nephew to the Big Tuna and always thrilled at the chance to pull his trigger.
The play will run every Saturday in April at 8 pm. Tickets will be $10. The Improv Space is located at 954 Gayley Avenue in Westwood.
